It reconstructs rather than hides
The older way to deal with a watermark is to smear over it: blur the region, or clone a nearby patch across it. Both leave a scar exactly where the eye goes. A generative model instead predicts what the covered pixels should have been, given everything around them — so a watermark across a face, a horizon or a repeating pattern comes back as face, horizon and pattern rather than as a soft grey rectangle.
