The slider runs from 1 to 10 and higher always means more compression and a smaller file. It is a compression level, not a quality score — level 10 is the most aggressive setting, not the best-looking one. Level 5 is a deliberate default: on ordinary photographs the difference from the original is hard to see side by side, while the file is a fraction of the size.
Compression can make a file larger — re-encoding an already-optimised image is the usual way. When that happens the original is returned untouched rather than a worse, heavier version of it. An image that is already as small as it sensibly gets simply comes back as it went in.
It does not resize, crop, convert between formats, or add a mark of any kind to your output. It makes the same picture into a smaller file. If you also need something removed from the image, that is a separate run through the watermark remover.
